By Carolyn Anderson
If you are a fishing enthusiast and you have been wanting to learn the making wooden lures for bass fishing or for other types of fishes, whether in saltwater or freshwater, then you may want to learn a few tips on how to make one.
You can start with finding the right material for your wooden lure. The first step to making wooden lures is of course to find the materials or wood that you want to use for your lure. In choosing your wood, keep in mind that using softwood or hardwood matters. If you choose softwoods, your lure would be lighter and has a big possibility that it will float.
Hardwood on the other hand can be suspended well and may have a tighter action, but keep in mind too that hardwood may be difficult to shape. Although different types of wood can still catch fish, you will eventually learn which type of wood is suitable for the types of fish that you want to catch. Most often, wooden lures are made of basswood, white cedar or cedar. It is it your first time in making wooden lures, you may start with these types of wood first as they are easy to work with and are good also for fishing as well.
The tools you need in making wooden lures may be common and present in your tool shed. If you see wooden lure making as a hobby, you can also get yourself some specialized tool to make this task a little easier and lighter. A hammer, a hand saw, or back saw, a hand drill to add holes in your wooden lure and other basic tools you will need for cutting, sanding, painting and designing your lure. You may also need a carving knife to etch details in your wooden lure.
To start making your wooden lures, you have to sketch the outline of your lure on the wood and with your carving knife, carve the actual design of your lure until up to the details of the edges. With sandpaper, sand your carved design until the edges are smoothened and the shape is attained.
Make a sketch on where you want to put your hooks and drill holes on it with your hand drill. You can also add superglue on the holes when your hooks are already attached to strengthen it. After all the hooks are done and the surfaces of your wooden lure are smoothened, you can then find a good painting design for your lure. You may want to follow a pattern for your lure depending on the fish you want to catch. Make sure however that you get a water resistant paint to make its color remain ”real” underwater.
If you love woodworking, you may want to a hobby out of making wooden lures. You can experiment with the types of wood that makes a great catch and experiment with different designs that is suitable for certain types of fishes like bass.
