Fishing used to be a means of survival, now it has become a popular sport and past time all around the world. From deep sea fishing to river and lake varieties, people enjoy fishing as a competitive sport, solo activity or family bonding experience, often during vacations and travel holidays. Auto GPS units have become popular with the technical advancements of vehicles. It used to be that auto GPS units were reserved for special government related, military and security systems. In our advanced world, it is now common for auto GPS units to come standard on most new vehicles.

Technology hasnt stopped with cars, though, fishing has become high tech, too. One such example of high technology fishing equipment is the GPS fish finder. This instrument helps fisherman find the animals they hunt, all credited to sonar transmitters. The word sonar is actually an acronym for Sound Navigation Ranging. Developed during World War Two to track enemy submarine fleets, a sonar has a transmitter, receiver, transducer and display, all of which translate to a device that is readable and serves the purpose of tracking various moving objects, in the case of fishing, fish.

A GPS fish finder locates swimming animals by sending an electrical impulse from the transmitter, converted into a sound wave by the transducer, which then travels through water en rout to a single fish or perhaps school of a specific species. Of course finding a school of fish is the more preferable of the two if you are a sports fisherman. As the sound wave continues to travel, it hits a fish or school or other swimming animal, bounces back and is displayed on the GPS fish finder screen.

These high tech electronics are often seen on television shows such as Discovery Channel, also on the same networks popular special programming Shark Week. Again, you dont have to be a commercial fisherman to have access to these devices anymore, now such systems are available to average Joe leisure fisherman.

While a marine GPS Unit is a handy toy to fish with, it still does not make a fish take the bait. It can find the fish, though, and so the marine GPS unit is a hit among serious competitors within the world of sports fishing. Just like driving your car to a grocery store you have never been to, with a marine GPS unit, a boat can get navigational direction to a body of waters specific coordinates so that bountiful fishing is more likely.

Want to fish, but don’t know how? Then a fly fishing school may be just the ticket to get you started on what may turn out to be a life long love affair with fly fishing. There are fly fishing schools geared to all your individual needs as a fisherman or woman.

If you want to fish in a particular place or for a specific species there are schools devoted to these pursuits. Saltwater, Freshwater or Nymph, cold water or warm water, Alaska, Ontario or Ireland; all are covered. You can find schools for kids, or schools run by women, for women. Wherever you want to fish you will find a fly fishing school to fit your needs.

If you want to learn new techniques, get advice on equipment, or find out the best places in your area for fishing, a fly fishing school can provide a valuable experience.

If you like the idea of socializing with like-minded people, a fly fishing club is also a good choice. There are clubs all over the world dedicated to the sport of fly fishing. There are clubs that cater to those who are physically challenged. There are also clubs for women only. There are international clubs or those dedicated to local areas of fishing.

There are many advantages to joining a fly fishing club. You will have the chance to exchange ideas, share information and learn new techniques. Many clubs will have lending libraries of books, magazines and videos, even equipment. Some clubs participate in trade shows and fairs giving you another means to communicate with other fly fishermen.

Another advantage to belonging to a fly fishing club is that often these clubs are able to get discounts on products and tours. Many clubs publish newsletters to keep you up to date on all the latest news for your sport. Besides being a source of fun, belonging to a club can be a very wise investment.

Cutthroat Trout: Cutthroat Trout are generally found only in high alpine lakes or in some selected areas of the Pacific Northwest.

The Cutthroat Trout is the original trout of the Rocky Mountains. Unlike Brown Trout which were originally introduced to the Eastern United States, Cutthroat Trout are originally from the Western half of the United States.

What separates the Cutthroat Trout from other trout is that Cutthroat Trout are found primarily in remote and pristine locations. Unlike their larger cousins, the rainbows and the browns, Cutthroat Trout tend to fare poorly in highly competitive environments especially when predatory fish like Pike are introduced into their waters. As such, the range of the Cutthroat Trout has been driven back over the years.

While Cutthroat Trout are still found in good numbers in many of the rivers in Montana (such as the Yellowstone), the best Cutthroat Trout fishing will usually now be found deep in the backcountry - in isolated mountain lakes and streams. This requires lots of effort by the angler just to reach the Cutthroat Trout, because they are often found in very remote areas. Cutthroat Trout do not receive as much fly fishing pressure as their rainbow and Brown Trout cousins. As such, they are generally easier to catch and found in greater numbers. However, Cutthroat Trout do not get as large as rainbow or Brown Trout, and generally lack the aerial abilities that other trout display when hooked.

Cutthroat Trout can be easily identified by the two red slashes under and on the outside of its lower jaw. The sides of the Cutthroat Trout are brownish yellow and are highlighted with black spots. Other colorings of Cutthroat Trout can occur, but only as a result of crossbreeding between Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout, and are called cut-bow trout.

Golden Trout: Rare and elusive, the Golden Trout inhabit some of the most remote lakes in the United States.

The Golden Trout is one elusive species of trout. Golden Trout have very limited range, as they are only found in high alpine lakes and streams found in the Rocky Mountains and the Cascades. Because of this, reaching good Golden Trout waters is no easy task usually requiring a long hike or horse pack in.

Additionally, due to the environment in which the Golden Trout live in (very cold, low nutrient water), Golden Trout are generally quite small, as there is just not enough food to support larger trout.

Despite the relatively low fishing pressure they receive, Golden Trout can be somewhat difficult to catch, as they tend to be fickle about what they eat. Moreover, not all high alpine lakes and rivers contain these trout so simply locating waters that have good Golden Trout populations can be an effort in and of itself.

That said, since Golden Trout live in the most beautiful scenery in the United States, a day spent looking for or fishing for Golden Trout can never be wasted even if you don t catch any. For an angler looking to catch trout in a splendid and scenic environment, chasing the Golden Trout is the way go.

It s hard to miss a Golden Trout, as their name conveys. These beautiful trout are golden in color, so are hard to mistake for other types of fish. The Golden Trout also has a scattering of black spots and a red striping along its lateral line, belly and gill plates.

Since Golden Trout are not very common, it is recommended that anglers who catch Golden Trout release them instead of eating them. If you re looking for a fish you can eat, go hook some Brook Trout instead. Brookies are usually found in the same waters as Golden Trout are, but are not nearly as rare. Most agree they taste better too!

The outdoors, including fishing, has always been one of my favourite things to do. I remember being a kid and my dad taking me out to the local ponds around our house and catching small fish. I remember my grandpa taking me to a local lake near his house and him catching a 55 lbs flat head catfish. In fact, he had to wrestle the thing to get into the boat. It is definitely something I will never forget.

However, one of the biggest and best times I have ever had fishing would have to be while up north in Alaska. They call it the ‘’salmon run'’ when the salmon are pushing up the rivers and streams getting ready to lay eggs. It was the year 1998 in the first week of August that we were up there in Ketchikan walking up and down the rivers. You did not have to go far though, in fact, the salmon were so thick that you could cast a large lure and pull it through the water fairly quickly and accidentally snag them.

You have never fought a fish until you have snagged a big salmon. We ended up throwing most of them back but until a few years ago I had not really developed a taste for salmon. Now, I love it. I am intending to go back in a year or two to do some more fishing and hopefully will bring some back with me next time.

Another great time of the year for fishing would have to be in the early spring. It is about this time of the year (April) when the Largemouth Bass begin spawning. This means they are up close to the banks and around brush in the water. In a well stocked pond you can easily catch several in a couple of hours.

Bass are without a doubt one of the most fun fishes to catch. Pound for pound, they are probably one of the harder fighting fishes. They seem down right angry when you have them hooked. Most have probably seen pictures if they have never caught one. They are very popular to fish for and they often leap out of the water in an effort to get away. They are a lot of fun to catch. Most people just release them back into the water but I have heard that they are good eating.

Trout are also great to catch. This is a more northern fish that typically lives in colder water. Unfortunately in my neck of the woods we only have a few rivers that have them each year. However, Colorado, a neighbouring state is a great place to go trout fishing. This is typically done all throughout the summer as the snow is melting off the mountain tops and streams are full of water. I went up to Colorado one year after a mild winter where not much snow was melting and had a blast as it was easy to walk through the streams.

Overall, any time during the summer you can find great fish to catch.

When you are starting out in business and the time is right to set up a website, one of the first thoughts you are likely to have is to buy a domain name for your company. Whilst you may well be enjoying coming up with possible names and checking out if they are available, there is another option you can take and this is to buy an already existing domain name.

Clearly an existing website is not what you are looking for as you will want to create one of your own revealing your business vision, but the benefits of buying a domain name already in existence are numerous so if you have not set your heart on a totally new domain name this is an alternative option open to you.

The main advantage is that the website already in operation has traffic flowing in its direction. The particular amount of traffic will obviously depend on what effort has been put in by the current owner by way of promotion. However, any traffic at all is better than nothing and the number of visits shown on the website will be more effective at drawing further viewers than one stating zero, as would be the case in a brand new domain name.

Search engine optimization is also an advantage as the current owner is likely to have spent a little time optimizing the domain name portfolio for search engine benefits. Many owners make a specific effort in targeting keywords to ensure the domain name gets listed. In this way you can capitalize on their earlier efforts which have allowed their (and now your) domain name to work its way into the listings of the search engines.

A third advantage is that the day of short and targeted key word domain names is past. In fact it is practically impossible to come up with an unregistered domain name of a brief and memorable nature especially if you already have a certain keyword in mind. However, many of the catchy domain names which were registered previously were done for short term investment purposes so you may find they are willing to sell on the name. This is really the only way to get your hands on one of these pre-existing domain names.

Selecting the perfect domain name for your internet business can be both challenging and exciting, but if you do some research and find out about the availability of existing domain names you may well discover a super bargain which will get your business off to an excellent start.

A freshly caught fish can be cooked in a thousand and one ways. Any fisherman worth his salt has his own unique way of cooking a freshly caught trout, salmon or whatever fish he caught. So fisherman all across the country has been handed down methods of cooking fish. Here are some tips to get the best out of your fish.

1.Frying

Breading and frying a freshly caught fish is as good as it gets. The smell of butter emanating from the frying pan and the flair a fisherman puts in flipping his catch is worth its weight in gold, almost. For the novice fisherman, make sure that the butter is extra hot but not yet burning. Also, make sure that the fish is well coated in batter. Season your batter to your heart’s content, salt and pepper never goes wrong. You may want to try other herbs and spices with the batter for a more delicious fish.

2.Grilling

At first glance, grilling would seem to be the easiest way to handle your fish. A newbie might assume that grilling fish is the same as grilling steaks or burgers. Unlike fowl or cattle, fish tends to secret most of its own juices when cooked. On a grill the delicious juice drips into the coals.

To prevent losing the moisture, first coat the fish with oil. The oil will seal a part of the moisture inside. Second, keep an eye on the fillets and turn them as soon as a cut would reveal that the fresh fish is cooked halfway through. After being flipped, watch the fish carefully. Remove the fish as soon as it is cooked through.

An option to basting the fish with oil is to wrap it in aluminum foil. The aluminum foil will keep the moisture and marinate the fish in its own moisture. Placing herbs and spices inside the foil with the fish enhances the grilling process and the fish itself.

3.Baking

Baking is the best option for the fisherman who does not want to watch over the fish during cooking. The fisherman can prepare the marinade and pre-heat the oven, then pop the fish into the oven for a predetermined amount of time. You may want to check on the fish from the time to time, ensuring that you don’t overcook the fish.

Whatever fish you caught, a good recipe and proper cooking will for sure enhance the catch. Take time to prepare for cooking, a badly cooked fish will no doubt spoil your day. Remember the first rule of cooking, don’t overcook your fish.

WADING A STREAM

Ideal Fishing

The ideal way to fish a bass stream, if its depth and bottom will permit, is to wade. Some one has said that Art is the beautiful way of doing things. Certainly then, wading the stream is the artist’s way of fishing for Micropterus. It has all the charm of trout fishing and all of its thrills and seldom is so lonesome since many of our bass streams are in settled districts. One often fishes a stream and is never out of hearing of the cowbells and the barking of friendly farm dogs but is in the wilderness nevertheless. When the angler wades he becomes a part of the stream and its life and the more he fishes a fine stretch of water the friendlier it becomes.

One reason I believe bass fly fishermen are not as generally successful as their trout fishing brethren is because the bass fisher, as a class, has not put as much study into his waters and his methods. This is not to be wondered at when you consider that fly fishing for bass is, compared with trouting, in its first tooth stage. In other words, if some anglers loudly proclaim that the east wind bloweth when they are bassing with flies it is due, not to the bass but to the angler.

True one seldom gets the big, old, granddaddy bass of ‘em all on a fly, neither do the bigger trout come to the net by the same route, but the average of the stream or lake can be caught on flies and are on certain waters. Is it entirely because of certain local peculiarities of fish, water or conditions that fly fishing for bass is practiced so successfully on such widely separated waters as, to mention a few: the upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers in the Middle West; the Susquehanna, Potomac and Delaware in the East; the Current and St. Francis in the Ozarks; the Belgrade Lakes in Maine? I think not. Bass fly fishing has long been practiced and studied in these places, hence the success.

Aside from its beauty and charm wading a stream makes for success. In the first place a stream that is of wadable depth is ideal for fly fishing and the angler, moving slowly and quietly, with only a portion of his body above water is, as old Dennys put it, less likely to “offend the fearful Fish’s eye.”

Seasons, Weather, Etc.

As a general rule the trout fisher can go a-fishing earlier with his flies than the angler who fishes for bass in northern North America. A great many of our good bass streams are in civilized territory and the Spring rains, plus the drainage of farm lands, usually roils the water. If one must have bass then most success will be had if he will dangle an angle, baited with worm, helgramite or craw, in the deep holes.

As the season advances fly fishing improves but June usually finds the bass busy with family affairs and they should not be bothered even if the law permits. July is usually a good month on all streams and on the larger ones this month and August often produce best of all - and just when the lakes are yielding least. Very low water, however, often drives the fish into the holes on small streams during the ” dog days.”

September, the month Eastern and Midwest trout fishermen close up shop, is usually excellent except the week of the equinoctial storm. October - brown October - also yields well, and the seasons we have “a late Fall” fishing continues good even well into November. Local conditions also must be considered.

The ideal fly fishing day is a dark, overcast one, just before a rain, or better still, when it merely suggests or threatens to rain and doesn’t with enough breeze to ruffle the surface of the water. Next best is what the average person would call a “nice day.”- when the sun shines, the sky is blue and friendly and streamside posies and tree tops nod to fitful breeze lets that put a slight ripple on the stream.

The best time of the day is undoubtedly the early morning hours, from dawn until eight or nine o’clock and from four in the afternoon until sundown or even until after dark. During cloudy days the noon hours often produce well. However, most of us fish the day through and perhaps it doesn’t add much to the heft of our creels but it adds lightness to our hearts and uplift to our spirits and there is always the anticipation of the luck the evening fishing is going to bring us - unless, perchance, it is the last day and we must quit untimely to catch the 5:15 for home. Then we are out of luck as the fish invariably begin to rise well as the quitting hour approaches -’twas ever thus as the poets say! But never mind: other days are coming and for that matter if the fish become too challenging one can always “miss” a train and send a telegram of explanation later. Such things have happened! In fact, I know bald-headed men who have, choosing love before duty, thus played truant from home and business under these circumstances.

Thunder and lightning storms are unpropitious for good fishing but a gentle shower often turns the tide in our favor and sets the fish to rising.

The direction of the wind has little to do with the success of a day on a stream as the wind comes from all directions if the river is at all winding. The proverbial east wind may have local influences, in England or on our east coast, but otherwise is not objectionable and the phases of the moon have little to do with fishermen’s luck or the whimsical mood of Micropterus, except that the bass may do their feeding on moonlight nights and be indifferent during the day. In this case the angler, well prepared for mosquitoes and with heavy tackle, can do his fishing after sundown.

By Daniel Eggertsen

I consider Florida to be the Mecca of Largemouth Bass fishing in the United States. There are many places to fish in Florida. In this article I will describe one place that is well known and one little known place that offers great fishing opportunities as well. I want to stress that there are many different lakes to fish in Florida. When I talk about Lake Okeechobee for instance understand that there are hundreds of lakes that fit the same description throughout South Florida.

Lake Okeechobee is perhaps the most famous Largemouth Bass lake in the United States; It has earned that reputation by continuously producing large numbers of very large bass. It is a very large lake, over 50,000 square miles! It is also a very shallow Lake. A large portion of this lake is less than 6 feet deep. These in fact are the areas that often hold the largest bass. I would venture to guess than over half of the ten pound or larger bass I have caught have come from water that was 306 foot deep.

Fishing Lake Okeechobee can be a challenge but very rewarding. You will of course want to find the shallow weedy areas of the lake. If your only concern is boating a huge Largemouth Bass then you might want to consider fishing with livebait. The specific livebait of choice in this lake is the wild Florida Shiner. They are available at most marinas/bait shops in the area. If you are going to target huge Largemouth Bass you will need to use large bait. An eight to ten inch long shiner allowed to swim freely under a float, or free lined, is an awesome presentation. Understand that with large bait you need to use a very large hook. Make sure your hook is well sharpened as it must penetrate the tough mouth of a very large fish. You need to use a stout heavy action rod that has enough backbone to set that hook deep inside the mouth of your quarry.

If you prefer the more sporting method of using artificial baits then you need to gear your arsenal to fishing in heavy weeds. Spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and other topwater offering are much more important to have in your box than crankbaits and spoons. You need to be able to retrieve your lure through the heavy cover where the bass lie. Again make sure your hooks are sharp. Vary your retrieve until you find the proper presentations. You will find some days where a fast retrieve is required to catch very active fish. On other days you need a much slower presentation.

There are several popular techniques for catching Largemouth bass. I will describe some of them in this article and hopefully point you in the right direction in your search for more fish.

One of the more popular methods of catching big fish is called “pitching” or “flipping”. This method of fishing requires patience and stealth. You will need a rod that is longer than usual, generally about six and a half to seven and a half feet long. Your reel should be very powerful and should be filled with heavy line, at least twenty pound test monofilament.

When using this method of fishing you are targeting specific fish holding near specific areas of cover. You generally will “pitch” your lure no more than twenty to thirty fee from the boat. You therefore need to be very quiet and discreet in reaching your spot. Even a trolling motor is too loud when you start to get very close. This is a great approach for inactive fish. It works often on hot summer days when the fish will not otherwise bite. You objective is simply to put your bait right under the nose of the fish. Because you are fishing heavy cover you need to be ready for any strikes. It is imperative you set your hook quick and horse the fish away from the heavy cover you caught him under. This is why the long heavy rod and heavy line are used.

Topwater fishing is another excellent method for catching Largemouth Bass. It is considered by many to be the most exciting way to fish. Watching the fish attack your bait and not just feeling it can be a thrill. It can also be a hindrance if you do not know how to react. It is very important to wait until you feel a strike before you set the hook. Novice fisherman will often jerk their bait when they see the fish tailing their lure. This will in fact pull the bait away from the fish before it has had a chance to engulf it. When fishing in a topwater style the key concept to remember is to employ an erratic retrieve. You are trying to imitate a small wounded fish when fishing in this manner. The steady monotonous retrieve that works with a crankbait will not suffice in this scenario. You need to employ a series of stop and go moves along with the occasional jerk of the rod tip to give your bait a very inconsistent movement pattern.

Fishing Tips - Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods

Beyond a doubt the best fly fishing rod material is good bamboo properly selected, cured, split, glued, and correctly proportioned. It possesses strength combined with lightness, resiliency, pliancy, power and balance in greater degree than either steel or solid woods.

Formerly anglers and rod makers could draw fine distinctions between male and female Calcutta and Tonkin ” canes,” but under present conditions good Calcutta is very rare and the word ” Calcutta ” is be coming merely a trade term. Good bamboo of all kinds is more difficult to obtain and a good piece of Tonkin is better than an indifferent one of Calcutta. Male Calcutta, however, is supposed to be superior to either the female or Tonkin. The cheapest split cane is known as steel vine or African cane. It is light colored and makes up into good, inexpensive bamboo fly fishing rods.

Six Strip and 8 Strip Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods

We assume that you know that bamboo is split and then glued together in order to utilize the hard outer enamel and reduce the diameter of the pieces. Some rods are made of bamboo split into six sections (hex agonal) and some in eight (octagonal) but the six strip construction is more often used. Some makers claim that the eight strip, being more nearly a true cylinder, possesses better action but this seems to be more theoretical than practical, while the tiny tips of an eight strip rod are likely to be ” soft” due to the comparative amount of glue necessary to hold the pieces together. Eight strip rods cost more than the six strip and if the angler wants a round bamboo fly fishing rod they are preferable to the six strip planed down as planing certainly must injure a rod. As a general rule a well-made six strip rod leaves little to be desired.

Special Feature Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods

A novelty in bamboo fly fishing rod making is what is known as the ” double built ” rods which are made of two layers of split and glued bamboo, one within the other. They are heavier and strong, and it is claimed, hold their shape better, than ordinary rods and are popular for sea and salmon fishing but unnecessary, I believe, in single hand fly rods. An English innovation is the steel center rod which consists of a fine piece of well-tempered steel running as a core through sections of regular split bamboo. The makers claim this construction gives a rod of superior casting power with only of an ounce added weight. Friends who possess rods of this kind are enthusiastic admirers of this construction for heavy fishing.

An American maker supplies a rod of ” twisted bam boo ” which he claims equalizes the strain and pro duces better action. I have never tried a rod of this type so am unable to pass on its merits, but Perry Frazer, in his ” Amateur Rodmaking,” speaks well of it.
